Melipona bee is a variety that is vital to the ecosystem. Since ancient times, the honey produced by this type of bee was considered sacred since it also provides healing values. In Xel-Há Park, a ceremony takes place twice a year to harvest honey with the participation of a native priest and an astrologist to rescue these ancient traditions.
This ceremony takes place during the full moon of June and December to collect honey and clean the hives. Musicians, altars, and flowers are involved, and at the end, everybody enjoys a feast. One of the main characteristics of the melipona bee is that it lacks a stinger and is harmless to humans.
